reside: expresses the idea that a person keeps or returns to a particular place as his or her fixed, settled, or legal abode: ~ happily in New Hampshire.   (abode: 住所寓所.You are welcome to my humble abode竭诚欢迎光临寒舍. right of abode: 居住权)


live: may stress the idea of actually spending one's time and carrying out the activities of one's family life: ~d for years in the house next door.


dwell: a close synonym of these words, is likely to appear in elevated language: longed to ~ amongst trees and hills.  (elevate提升,elevator: 直梯)


sojourn: distinctively implies a temporary habitation or abode or a more or less uncertain place or way of living: ~ed for a while in the south of France.


lodge: also suggests a habitation for a time and may connote restricted accomodations such as in a hotel or rooming house: chose to ~ there for the night.   (rooming house: 有家具的出租房屋，如Forrest Gump阿甘家)


stay: is the term commonly used in place of sojourn or lodge: ~ed at that hotel for the entire week.


put up: is the equivalent of lodge, and usually suggests the status of a guest: decided to ~ at her sister's house for the weekend.
